NCEO and the TIES Center, both funded by the Office of Special Education Programs, have jointly published four additional videos in a series for parents of K-12 students with significant cognitive disabilities. The videos, available on NCEO’s YouTube Channel, address simple ways for parents of children with significant cognitive disabilities to support their child’s reading and math development at home:
Helping Your Child with the Foundations of Math While at Home
Helping Your Child with Math While at Home
Helping Your Child with the Foundations of Reading at Home
Helping Your Child with Reading at Home
The two foundations videos address ways that parents can create a home environment to support the development of foundational math and reading skills as students move toward beginning-level skills. The other two videos address ways to build on beginning reading and math skills through daily activities.
Similar to previous videos in the series, each new video focuses on three key questions: Why is it important to focus on this with my child at home? How can I do this at home? What support can I ask for from my child’s school? These videos help families learn ways to support the learning of their children with significant cognitive disabilities at home and have conversations with teachers to link home and schools supports. Educators and other audiences will also find the videos useful as they work with parents and families.
Three additional videos are planned to address ways for parents to support the learning of writing at home and ways to monitor their child’s learning progress. To be notified when additional videos are released, follow NCEO on Facebook or subscribe to NCEO’s YouTube channel.
