Fireside Chat on Including Students with Disabilities in Large-Scale Assessments

The National Center on Educational Outcomes’ (NCEO’s) Andrew Hinkle gave a Fireside Chat for the National Council on Measurement in Education’s (NCME) Large-Scale Assessment Special Interest Group in Measurement in Education (SIGIMIE) titled, Considerations for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities in Large-Scale Assessment: Past, Present, and Future.

Historically students with disabilities were often excluded from large-scale assessments. It was only with the 1994 reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) that students with disabilities were required to be included. Almost 30 years later there are still many issues that state education agencies (SEAs) and others struggle with to provide access to students with disabilities to assessments. During this Fireside Chat, Andrew Hinkle looked at the history of the inclusion of students with disabilities in large-scale assessments, discussed many of the hot topics confronting the field today, and finished with a peek into what the future may hold.
